You may have heard of the “credit reporting bureaus” that manage your credit report and determine your credit score. But who are they? Basically, they’re credit reporting agencies (CRAs) that gather data about consumers and have it available to credit card companies, banks, prospective employers and landlords, and others. There are three main CRAs in the USA: Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian.
CRAs are granted access to anyone you have a credit account with (credit card companies, banks, etc.), and they monitor your payment history. They also have access to the court system and other government agencies.

There are so many ways fraudsters use credit card information it seems almost impossible to come up with something new. However, U.S. Postal Service had to deal with a new type of identity theft.
Three young men - Artem Danilov, Stephan Melkonyan and Karapet Kankanian used stolen credit card information to purchase 3,200 books of stamps from self-service stamp machines in the Seattle-area. Similar crimes had happened in several western states causing financial loss of about $62,000. Two of the three suspects are originally from Russia and one has arrived from Armenia. Only one of them is a U.S. resident.

The lawsuit filed against Apple Inc is the latest one in the chain of class action lawsuit against big retail companies for disclosing credit card information on their receipts. The ones that are under legal attack are Wendy's International Inc., Rite Aid Corp., TJX Cos., FedEx Corp. and Inter Ikea Systems BV.
All of these corporations widely accept credit cards and these lawsuits can seriously damage their reputation.
